Over the weekend, the highly anticipated live-action Barbie movie released in theaters. Directed by Academy Award nominee Greta Gerwig (Little Women, Lady Bird) and co-written by Gerwig and Academy Award nominated filmmaker Noah Baumbach (White Noise, Marriage Story), Barbie has since broken box office records since it’s Friday, July 21 premiere.
Starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the film racked up a historic $162 million domestic opening weekend, the biggest opening for a female director. Barbie follows the iconic doll venturing into the real world once she starts to question her existence. The film depicted a message about womanhood and the human experience along with taking audience members back to their childhood and what it felt like to play with the fashion doll.
Barbie isn’t the only time childhood toys and games came to life in an innovative way on screen. After you watch Barbie in theaters, here are 11 other movies you can stream inspired by more toys and games.
