We were joined on the Popternative show by Colby Minifie (The Boys), Kate Burton (Scandal), and director Julia Max (Pieces of Me) to discuss their new horror film, The Surrender, which debuted on Shudder on May 23.
The film follows a fraught mother-daughter relationship between Barbara (Kate Burton) and Megan (Colby Minifie) that is put to a terrifying test when the family patriarch dies, and Barbara hires a mysterious stranger to bring her husband back from the dead. As the bizarre and brutal resurrection spirals out of control, both women must confront their differences as they fight for their lives, and for each other.
Written and directed by Julia, the cast also includes Neil Sandilands (Sweet Tooth), Vaughn Armstrong (Star Trek: Enterprise), Mia Ellis, Pete Ploszek (You), Chelsea Alden (13 Reasons Why), Alaina Pollack, Riley Rose Critchlow (The Jessica Cabin), and Lola Prince Kelly (Cassidy Red).

Colby, Kate, and Julia discuss how the film manages to balance horror with the portrayal of a realistic mother-daughter relationship, themes of grief, the current horror genre landscape, and Colby compares her work on Prime Video’s The Boys to her role as Megan in The Surrender.
