It’s a special time to be a horror lover. There is an influx of terrifying films and shows that have been released in 2023 thus far and the appetite to be scared is only increasing. Elevator Game actor Alec Carlos attributes the genre to shaping his storytelling talent.

Directed by Rebekah McKendry and written by Travis Seppala with additional writing by David Ian McKendry, Elevator Game is a supernatural horror “based on the eponymous online phenomenon, a ritual conducted in an elevator, in which players attempt to travel to another dimension using a set of rules that can be found online.”

While speaking with Popternative host Petey Beats, Alec Carlos shared what it’s like working in the horror genre during a surge for it and how the genre influenced him. “It is a dream come true because I’ll tell you what; when I first started, I guess just as a hobby because I was a filmmaker first and a writer, and so one of the first things, the first genres I ever learned how to write or just taught myself how to write was horror because I loved it like as a kid, I loved it,” Alec said.

He added, “The Grudge, terrifying, The Ring, terrifying, the original Ringu you know it all stuck to me and I remember being a kid and being like ‘wow I just watched this thing. I know it’s not real but why is it sticking with me like this’, and I feel like the surge now especially with what just came out like Elevator Game, Talk To Me, as well is on fire right now [Speak No Evil], Speak No freaking Evil yeah, amazing and that was only last year too. There’s so many hidden gems I think in the horror landscape that if anyone’s out there being like it’s like ‘oh there’s not enough horror,’ I thought I used to think that too. You just have to look. That’s the main thing.”
