We were joined on the Popternative show by Asa Butterfield (Sex Education, Flux Gourmet) to discuss his new family-friendly animated film, Stitch Head, adapted from the best-selling children’s book series by Guy Bass.

Now playing in theaters, and just in time for Halloween, Asa voices the titular character who is brought to life and stitched together by a quirky mad professor. When the townspeople discover the professor’s strange creations, Stitch Head must step out of the shadows to protect his friends and prove that even the smallest monster can be a hero.

Additional voice cast include Joel Fry (Our Flag Means Death, Plebs), Alison Steadman (Better Man, Here We Go), Rob Brydon (Gavin & Stacey, The Trip), Fern Brady (Fern Brady: Autistic Bikini Queen), Tia Bannon (Prime Target, The Midnight Sky), and Jamali Maddix (Outsiders, Spent).

On getting to voice a character, Asa told us, “It’s fun to really tap into new things and especially with me, voice acting wasn’t something I’ve done a lot of. So, this was a new challenge to see what I can do when it’s just my voice and I haven’t got my face and body to lean on.”

When asked if he leaned on the book series or not to prepare, he replied, “I mostly used the script as my reference point because I think the script took a kind of condensed [version] of who Stitch Head is in the books into this 90 minute [movie]. But when it came to finding his voice, I had a lot of what was written on the pages and the visuals [to help]. It’s this kid who is literally stitched together who is searching for connection, love, and a family. Using all these bits of information helped me [figure out] what this voice would be.”
