We were joined on the Popternative show by Jinjara Mitchell and Jordan Connor to discuss their short film, The Ornament which had its world premiere in July at the Female Eye Film Festival, where it received an Honorable Mention for Best Short Film.

Written and directed by Jinjara, and produced by Jordan, the holiday centered film follows nine-year old Tessa who is given an assignment to share her holiday traditions with the class. What starts off as an innocent project turns into into a heart-wrenching journey for Tessa. The assignment forces her to make a difficult decision: disclose the painful truth about her abusive mother, or continue to tell the lies she’s expected to.

The Ornament stars Remy Marthaller (Seagrass, When Calls the Heart) as Tessa, and Nathalie Boltt (Riverdale, District 9) as Tessa’s mother.

A current member of the prestigious Women In The Director’s Chair CAM program, The Ornament is Jinjara’s debut short film. She has several other projects in development, including her first feature film, Last Summer, and a series titled All That Glitters. She is also proud to be co-writing the feature film Shattered, which recently received funding from the Government of Canada.

Check out our conversation with Jinjara and Jordan below where they discuss The Ornament and what went into making this important film come to life.
