We caught up with the band Anarbor about their new music video for “Drugs“. It has been a long time since Anarbor has released new music and it was great to catch up with them.

“Drugs” will make you get up and dance with its retro-based melody and groovy guitars. The video, reminiscent of an old VHS tape, features the band singing through a series of pop-art filters and animated characters. – official song description

How does it feel to be back with new music?

We’re equally excited and anxious about being back with new music. This new music has been highly anticipated and we can’t wait to get it out for all the fans!

What can you tell us about your song “Drugs”?

The song “Drugs” explores the best and worst parts of a relationship in a metaphor about doing drugs; explosive emotions, comedowns, addiction and desire for independence. From its playful guitar riff to its strong, catchy hook, it’s a song that makes you want to dance from start to finish.

What do you think about a lot of the genre bend happening in music?

We grew up in a world where genre-specificity was very rigid and it played a huge part in defining a band’s career path. Nowadays, those barriers are starting to dissolve as you see things like rock, pop-punk, hip-hop, and dance music artists taking influence from one another. It’s really exciting for us as a band because Anarbor has always been genre-fluid, so the current music landscape really allows us to explore our creative freedom to its full potential.

Did you always know that music was something you wanted to pursue?

It’s always been difficult to pursue music, it’s never been an overnight journey. Having a career in music is a roller-coaster, sometimes you’re really excited about what’s on the horizon and sometimes you feel hopeless and want to quit. It’s the belief in our fans and our own love of the music that keeps us going. At the end of the day, this band is bigger than just the two of us and I don’t think either of us would be able to live with ourselves if we didn’t really put everything we have into making this happen for our fans and ourselves.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

Work hard, listen to all different kinds of music, and know that there is no right or wrong way to write a song. Be true to yourself as an artist and be patient. It’s rough, but you have to find your own way in this industry and no matter how many people try to tell you they have the answer, they don’t. You just have to find it on your own. If you love music and truly give it everything you have, you will find your way.

What is your favorite song to perform live?

Gypsy Woman”. It’s always been a fan-favorite and it ignites the room with this crazy energy that reminds us that we’ll always be a fucking rock ‘n roll band at our core. That energy is who we are and why people come to see us.

Can you describe your creative process when you’re writing new music?

When we write songs, we first get some basic guitar, bass and drums laid out, and then we talk about what vibes and emotions the music gives off.  Once we find a theme we want to explore, we move onto writing vocal melodies just singing random gibberish until we know we’ve nailed it. Then the hard part comes: plugging in the right words into those melodies. Often, this is what takes the longest. We have the melody, we know exactly how many syllables we need, but we have to find the perfect words to say exactly what we feel, so we pitch about a hundred shitty ideas until we finally find something we like hahaha.

What has been the best advice someone has given you about music?

Always trust your gut and your original ideas. It’s cheesy as hell, but there’s no point in trying to do something that’s already been done, so just be you, but make it the best version of yourself.
