We were joined on the Popternative show by director David Moreau (MadS, Them) and Olga Kurylenko (Thunderbolts*, Oblivion) about their new horror thriller, Other which premiered on Shudder on October 17.
Olga stars in Other as Alice who returns to her childhood home after her mother’s death, only to find the house is rigged with surveillance tracking her every move, as a sinister presence lurks, driving her towards a terrifying revelation. As Alice spends more time in the home, she also starts to reminisce about her time as a teenager when her mother enforced strict rules to keep up her appearances and win beauty pageants.
On what made her want to be part of this project, Olga tells us, “This was one of the scariest scripts to read because it was psychologically terrifying and yet, true. These are things that happen and can happen. [The script] brought back certain memories, certain things that I’ve lived. I didn’t live everything [that happens in the film] obviously, but, there are certain things like the whole beauty concept; I’ve worked in the beauty industry. It completely touched me. It was very powerful.”

“You do need to feel connected to the character and [there needs to be some kind] of reality in order to make things scary. In [Other], it feels much more real. When [I read about] the beauty pageant contests, [I felt it represented] a kind of real monstrosity that fit well,” David adds.
