The holiday season is just around the corner which means tons of new Christmas themed content is starting to coming our way. On Friday, November 5, Netflix dropped their new rom-com film, Love Hard, to kick things off. Starring Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries), Jimmy O. Yang (Silicon Valley), and Darren Barnet (Never Have I Ever), Love Hard follows LA girl Natalie (Dobrev) who falls for Josh (Yang) from the East Coast on a dating app and she decides to surprise him for the holidays.
When she arrives to Lake Placid, New York, she discover that she’s been catfished; Josh has been using the photos of a guy he went to high school with named Tag (Barnet) the entire time they have been chatting and connecting over the phone. Instead of flying back to LA, Natalie and Josh make a deal to help each other out: he will give her tips in order to get close with Tag (the real guy in the photos), and she will pretend to be Josh’s girlfriend for the holidays to make his family happy. The film has a strong supporting cast consisting of James Saito (Eli Stone), Rebecca Staab (The Chronicle Mysteries: The Wrong Man), Harry Shum Jr. (Crazy Rich Asians), Takayo Fischer (Strawberry Fields), and Mikaela Hoover (The Suicide Squad).

While Love Hard has all the ingredients for your typical rom-com, it also has a certain charm to it along with an important message that resonates in today’s social media driven world. Being true to oneself – as cheesy as it may sound – is the takeaway here; the pressures of presenting ourselves online often results in hiding who we really are – both literally and figuratively!
Love Hard is now streaming on Netflix.
