We were joined on the Popternative show by Ian Chen who stars as Eugene Choi in Shazam! Fury of the Gods which premiered in theaters on March 17. Based on the DC Comics, the film continues the story we were introduced to in 2019’s Shazam! where teenage Billy Batson (Asher Angel) who can transform into the adult superhero Shazam (Zachary Levi) by simply shouting “Shazam!” Billy’s foster brothers and sisters also possess this power creating a team of superhero adults.

Ian and Ross Butler play Eugene Choi, Jack Dylan Grazer and Adam Brody as Freddy Freeman, Faithe Herman and Meagan Good as Darla Dudley, Grace Caroline Currey as Mary Bromfield, and Jovan Armand and D.J. Cotrona as Pedro Peña. Djimon Hounsou returns as Wizard Shazam along with Marta Milans and Cooper Andrews as foster parents Rosa and Victor Vasquez. New to the Shazam! franchise are Helen Mirren as Hespera, Lucy Liu as Kalypso, and Rachel Zegler as Anthea.

After playing Eugene now in two films, Ian tells us his favorite part of his character: “I think my favorite part of Eugene is probably his love for video games and technology. It’s just like a regular thing to be into video games; I’m into video games, tons of my friends are into video games, and for him to have this love for it and also to bring it into his fighting style as a superhero, it’s like he’s living his biggest dream.” Ian also tells us what fans can expect with this sequel, the special effects in the film, and his learning experiences from playing Evan in the popular sitcom Fresh Off the Boat from 2015-2020.
