We were joined on the Popternative show by Daniel Zovatto who stars alongside Russell Crowe in the supernatural horror thriller film, The Pope’s Exorcist, which was released in theaters on April 14. Inspired by the actual files of Father Gabriele Amorth (played by Russell Crowe) who was the Chief Exorcist of the Vatican, the film is set in 1987 and follows Father Amorth as he investigates a young boy in Spain’s demonic possession and discovers a centuries-old conspiracy the Vatican has been trying to hide. Zovatto plays Father Esquibel (a fictional character) who is sent to assist Amorth with the case and with performing the exorcism to follow.

In our interview, Daniel discusses how he prepared for his role of Father Esquibel which included speaking with real priests and consulting with linguists about speaking Latin, and working with Academy Award winner Russell Crowe. He also tells us what advice Crowe shared with him while filming, being on location in Ireland, and some of his previous work in the horror/thriller genre including Don’t Breathe and It Follows.

The Pope’s Exorcist is now available on PVOD and digital. It will be available on DVD/Blu-Ray on June 13.
