We were joined back on the Popternative show by Mika Abdalla (Sex Appeal) who plays Brooke in the new summer-themed coming-of-age comedy, Snack Shack, which was released in theaters March 15th, and is now available on digital. The film also stars Conor Sherry (Are You Afraid of the Dark?), Gabriel LaBelle (The Fabelmans), Nick Robinson (Love, Simon), and David Costabile (Billions).
Witten and directed by Adam Rehmeier (The Bunny Game), Snack Shack is set in Nebraska City during the summer of 1991 and follows best friends AJ and Moose who take on the challenge of running the local pool’s rundown snack shack after their other money-making plans come to an end. Things take an unexpected turn when they meet summer visitor Brooke, a lifeguard who puts their big summer plans, and their friendship, at risk.

When discussing filming a movie that takes place in the 90s, Mika says, “We were so fully immersed in the vibe of the 90s [that] there wasn’t a lot of prep going into it. And the story of the movie transcends generations; everyone can relate to the story and being 14, 15, 16 [years old] trying to figure out how to be an adult. [But] at times, we all kind of forgot we were shooting a movie [taking place] in the 90s.”
Mika also discusses working with the cast and crew, and reading the script for the first time. Watch the full interview below.
