Kwame Alexander’s critically-acclaimed best-selling novel in-verse, The Crossover, has been adapted into a Disney+ series which premiered on April 5. The series introduces teen brothers Josh and Jordan Bell, who are widely considered basketball phenoms. Through his lyrical poetry, an adult version of Josh, aka Filthy McNasty, narrates the story of he and his brother’s coming of age, on and off the court, as their former professional basketball player father adjusts to life after basketball, and their mother finally pursues lifelong dreams of her own.

The Crossover stars Jalyn Hall (Till, All American) as Josh ‘Filthy’ Bell, Amir O’Neil (Madagascar: A Little Wild, Mann and Wife) as Jordan ‘JB’ Bell, Sabrina Revelle (All American: Homecoming, Zac and Mia) as Crystal Bell, Derek Luke (Alone Together, 13 Reasons Why) as Chuck Bell, Deja Monique Cruz (Christmas With You, Manifest Evil) as Maya, Trevor Bush as Vondie, Skyla I’Lece (P-Valley) as Alexis, and Daveed Diggs (Hamilton, Snowpiercer) as the narrator.

Popternative spoke with Jalyn Hall, Amir O’Neil, Deja Monique Cruz, Trevor Bush, and Skyla I’Lece about the new series and how they each connect with their respective characters in some way. Watch the video below.
