We were joined on the Popternative show by Tom Ellis and Cat Missal to discuss season 2 of the Hulu drama series Tell Me Lies, which premiered on September 4th with the first 2 episodes. Season 2 picks up where the first season left off as Lucy Albright (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen DeMarco (Jackson White) return to college, not speaking after their dramatic breakup at the start of the summer in 2008.
Returning cast also include Spencer House, Sonia Mena, Branden Cook, and Alicia Crowder, with Tom and Thomas Doherty joining the new season. In season 2, we get to know Lucy and Stephen’s friends more as all of their storylines are much more expanded this time.
In season 2, Tom plays Oliver, a Baird College professor who is married to Bree (Cat Missal) and Lucy’s English professor, and forms a connection with Bree the moment they meet.
When discussing this new storyline for Bree, Cat says, “It was shocking to read, but I mean it’s so well written, it’s exciting as an actor to be able to approach this storyline as we did with a lot of care and delicate nature around the material, because it is really delicate material. Bree is this sweet, naive character and I love her so much, and I care about her so much, I really wanted to do the work justice and I hope people see that.”
When it came to preparing for their scenes together, Tom tells us, “We had all 8 scripts before we started shooting so we knew exactly what was going to happen, but when we got together early on to talk about it, [Cat and I] agreed the best way forward was to take it stage by stage. We were sort of discovering the relationship at the same as our viewers were in many ways, and that’s important because there are different stages to [their relationship] and the dynamic changes and evolves.”
