We were joined on the Popternative show by Tanzyn Crawford who stars as Rae in the new Hulu limited series Tiny Beautiful Things based on Cheryl Strayed’s best-selling book. The series premirered on April 7 and also stars Kathryn Hahn (Glass Onion: A Knives Out MysteryWandaVision), Sarah Pidgeon (The WildsGotham), Quentin Plair (Welcome to ChippendalesRoswell, New Mexico), with Owen Painter (The Handmaid’s Tale), Merritt Wever (Severance, Marriage Story), Elizabeth Hinkler (American AutoFollow Me), and Michaela Watkins (The DropoutCasual).

Tiny Beautiful Things follows Clare (Kathryn Hahn) a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart. After reluctantly taking on the advice column, Sugar, Clare’s life unfurls in a complex fabric of memory through flashbacks, exploring her most pivotal moments from childhood through present day. Through Sugar, Clare offers comfort for her readers, and for herself, to show us that we are not beyond rescue, that our stories can ultimately save us.

In our interview, Tanzyn discusses preparing for her role:

“I feel like I was quite lucky because I read the book during the show and before the show as well, and there’s not really anything about a daughter, Cheryl [Strayed] didn’t have a daughter at this age at the time, so I did definitely get free reign over the character to make it who it was. I wasn’t in a position like Kathryn [Hahn] or Sarah [Pidgeon] where everyone was very detailed in the book. I could kind of make up whatever I wanted to.”

She also talks about preparing for her scenes with Kathryn Hahn.
