Before joining Finding Her Edge, did you have any figure skating experience?
Nicole: I did have some figure skating experience as a kid! At an early age, I was exposed to all the drama and competitive edge figure skating had to offer and it was very exciting to delve back into that world once again during production.
After filming the series, what would you say you learned about the world of figure skating?
Nicole: Being on the show has taught me that the world of figure skating, as well as ice dancing, is far more mentally and physically demanding than it looks. We can really see how much strength, resilience and patience it takes to be an ice dancer as well as a singles skater. This is apparent in Adriana and Brayden’s partnership, as well as Elise’s internal battle on and off the ice.

What was your reaction to learning that Finding Her Edge was quickly renewed for a second season?
Nicole: I was absolutely ecstatic. Finding out so early on after the release date was the biggest, most wonderful surprise, especially because it feels like only yesterday we were on set filming Season 1. I cannot wait to able to work with this amazing cast and crew all over again and to see where everyone’s story goes.
How would you describe Katya’s character? Were you able to relate to her in some way?
Nicole: I would describe her as a fiercely dedicated diva who always finds a way to get what she wants. She can come across as tough or even mean with certain people, but shows a more playful and kind side with others. At her core, I think she carries a deep fear of letting people down, which drives her to push herself and do whatever it takes to succeed. I see parts of myself in Katya, especially in her ambition and determination to strive for greatness.

What was it like working with the cast on the show?
Nicole: I feel so lucky and grateful to have worked with such a wonderful cast. From the very first day on set, we instantly clicked and felt comfortable with each other right from the start. That made it so much easier work together, take creative risks, and really support one another through long days of filming. Everyone brought their unique selves to the table, and being surrounded by such talented and dedicated people made the entire experience more special and rewarding. By the end of it all, they really became family.
What was the preparation process like for you for the role?
Nicole: To prepare for the role, I focused on reconnecting with my background in figure skating and reigniting that competitive drive. Before filming, I spent a lot of time on the ice refining my skills and building the same fierce confidence that Katya brings to her performances. On set, I also worked with Brad Hopkins to prepare for the skating scenes, which was both an educational and inspiring experience.

The show became an instant hit on Netflix, with audiences tuning in from around the world. Why do you think it resonated so strongly?
Nicole: To begin with, the book Finding Her Edge by Jennifer Iacopelli truly provided this amazing story for us to tell. I think what the show does well is having a little something for everyone. It really does a good job of showcasing what it is like to navigate friendships and relationships in real life with the added backdrop pressure of being in a competitive sport—something a lot of teens and young adults can relate to. I know I can!
