How would you describe Austin’s character in this third season of Ginny & Georgia?
Diesel: I would describe him as the same Austin that we’ve seen in the previous seasons but carrying a lot of new information and weight that comes with that information. In the past seasons, in season two specifically, we saw what he saw his mom do later in that season, and then we saw what he did to his father in that one big night. That really tells a huge part of this season’s story. And in season three, we just really see Austin processing that information and we get to see the kind of cracks in this shy and gentle boy. We really see him dealing with it all in a few different ways.

What would you say you’ve learned from an acting perspective playing Austin now for three seasons?
Diesel: Three seasons has been six years and I was eight when I started filming, so there’s been a lot I’ve learned. Austin is kind of outside of the main heavy parts of the story, but there are really crucial moments that he does experience. We’ve known Austin to have a few mental health issues around those things; he goes quiet and stuff like that, and I’ve really learned through those issues that he has that acting doesn’t necessarily require lines to convey the emotion that you’re trying to show. You can do so much with different facial expressions and really feel the emotion rather than having something to say. So, really being able to feel it in the moment without having anything to say is a big thing that playing Austin has taught me.

Why do you think Ginny & Georgia is so popular and resonates with viewers across the world?
Diesel: I think it’s really popular because we touch on so many different subjects and there’s so many different characters of different ages. Teenagers can get something from Ginny and her friends, and then adults, even parents, can be watching Georgia and her friends going through issues. The show touches on so many different issues at so many different ages, that everyone can get a little bit of relatability from Ginny & Georgia.

Austin is really close with his sister and mother, and we really feel that on screen; how do you prepare for those scenes with Antonia and Brianne?
Diesel: Well, as I mentioned before, I’ve been doing this for six years. We know each other so well. On set, we have built such a close relationship, like this little family and they really are kind of a mother and sister figure for me on and off set. Getting into a scene with them has become something really raw and simple to do because we’re so familiar with each other as actors. These years that we’ve spent together, seeing each other on and off set, talking in the green room, we just know each other so well that it’s like coming into work every day and seeing family. So, it is really simple to drop into those really emotional scenes.
Season 3 of Ginny & Georgia is streaming globally on Netflix.
