What was your audition process like for Clown in the Cornfield?

Cassandra Potenza (CP): My agent sent me a self tape request for the project and as soon as I read the breakdown I knew I really wanted to be a part of it. I sent in the tape and about three weeks later – while I was at a Tate McRae concert – I got the call that I booked it. I can’t remember the rest of the concert after that though because I went into shock…it was such a surreal and special moment.

Did you know about the book before landing the role in the film?

CP: I was aware that the film was based on a book but I hadn’t read it yet. I actually think that worked in my favour because I was able to audition with my own take on Janet. After booking the role, I read the book right away and loved it. Adam’s [Cesare] writing is so vivid and unpredictable – it felt like I was on a roller coaster. It made me even more excited to be joining the project.

Were you afraid of clowns before filming this movie?

CP: I wasn’t! My experience with clowns had only been positive before this movie. I actually had one at my birthday party when I was a kid and it was nothing short of a fond memory. My current relationship with clowns however is… complicated.

What were some learning experiences from an acting perspective that you gained from filming Clown in a Cornfield?

CP: I’ve always been a fan of horror films, but getting to work on one firsthand gave me a whole new respect for the genre. It’s extremely heightened work that demands a lot of stamina – physically and emotionally. It pushed me in new ways and taught me how to take care of myself as both an actor and a human so that I’m able to continually go to those elevated places. It’s incredibly rewarding work at the same time and I really hope I get to continue working in the genre.

Do you remember what the first horror movie you watched was?

CP: I grew up in a non-horror household and I remember my mom would mention how The Exorcist scarred her for life. So naturally, when I got older, my curiosity kicked in and it was one of the first horror films I sought out. Horror films always felt like forbidden fruit in my house, so I think that made them even more thrilling. I’ve been a horror lover ever since.
