Our first feature for the month of July for Popternative Magazine is with Nashville based singer-songwriter Brynn Elliott. With relatable lyrics telling nostalgic stories combined with warm alt-pop vocals, Brynn describes her music as “singer-songwriter pop.”
Her newest single, “On My Own,” is featured in the season finale episode of the hit Prime Video series, We Were Liars. The series premiered on the streaming platform on June 18 and is based on the 2014 best-selling novel by E. Lockhart. Drawn to writing songs about deep, personal journeys, “On My Own” reflects her own experiences of losing her record deal and her father – a time where she realized she had to carve a new path for herself.

What initially drew you to music?
Brynn: When I was in high school, I began writing music as a way to unwind after intense school days. It was then that I realized I loved writing songs and trying to find ways to communicate different ideas and feelings through music.
What’s it like to record tracks compared to performing live?
Brynn: They are both such different experiences for me so it is hard to compare them. But recording is a very intellectual process for me. I’m trying to find different ways to say things through my lyrics and trying to find the best sounds for a particular song. When I’m playing live it’s much more about getting out of my head into my heart.

Your song “On My Own” is featured in the final scene of We Were Liars on Prime Video. Tell us a bit more about this track.
Brynn: Yes! I wrote this song as a kind of self empowerment anthem for myself about going my own way in life. Often, I have put a lot of pressure on myself to do this thing or that thing because I think it’s expected of me. But this song is about finding peace with the person you are. I am so glad it has landed in We Were Liars!

How does it feel to be featured on a show with a wide global audience on Prime Video? What has the reception been like?
Brynn: It feels so great that my song was chosen to help tell the story of We Were Liars on screen, I am so thrilled and grateful. The reception has been good. I can see that people are streaming it from watching the show and that’s such a thrill!
