Our last feature for the month of June for Popternative Magazine is with actor and dancer Amie Donald who reprises her role as the murderous dancing doll, M3GAN, in M3GAN 2.0, the sequel to 2023’s M3GAN.

Now playing in theaters, the horror-sci-fi-comedy takes place two years after the first film where the doll was destroyed after she went on a killing rampage. The tech used for M3GAN has now been stolen and misused by a defense contractor who creates a military-grade weapon known as Amelia, an infiltration spy. What follows is an epic face-off between M3GAN and Amelia.

You’ve portrayed M3GAN now for two films. What is your favorite thing about portraying this iconic character?

Amie: I think that she becomes more real every single day that she is alive. Because she’s an evolving AI, seeing her grow throughout the films is really amazing. I am so honored to be a part of it, it’s such a special little cast and crew that I’m very honored to be a part of. Every day on set was very fun. It was a blast to be there.

Was there specific preparation for the stunts on this film, or was it overall similar to the first?

Amie: Yes, we had two weeks of training; I trained for the Wing Chun scene on a dummy. They gave me my own dummy to practice on at home. I also did some kickboxing training to help me learn some of the fight scenes. So, I was doing that two weeks before as well. And I did some rig wire training as well, and they would put me in the rig wires, and just test out how it feels, and then we’d do it on set.

Is there something about the dancing components of the M3GAN films you would like to bring to future projects?

Amie: I think the creepiness of the dances and the unseriousness of them is something really cool that I think would be amazing to bring to another project.

What were the conversations you had with director Gerard Johnstone like?          

Amie: We had quite a few Zoom calls before filming, but also on set, if he wanted something specific he would come up to me and we would talk about it and then we’d make it happen right there.
