Our last digital cover for Popternative Magazine for the month of June features actor Violet McGraw who reprises her role as Cady in M3GAN 2.0, the sequel to M3GAN (Model 3 Generative Android) that introduced the world to the murderous doll with killer dance moves.
Out today in theaters, M3GAN 2.0 offers a blend of sci-fi, horror, comedy, thriller, and action, and takes place two years after the first film where M3GAN went rogue and was ultimately destroyed.
Allison Williams also returns in M3GAN 2.0 as Gemma, Cady’s aunt who is a toy developer and programmer, along with Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps as Gemma’s tech colleagues, Amie Donald as M3GAN, and Jenna Davis as the voice of M3GAN. The sequel also introduces new characters played by Aristotle Athari, Timm Sharp, Jemaine Clement, and Ivanna Sakhno.

In our exclusive chat, Violet tells us what audiences can expect from her character in M3GAN 2.0, some of the differences in the sequel compared to the first film, and acting advice she’s received from her sister, Madeleine.

What was it like to get back to set to film M3GAN 2.0?
Violet: It was amazing. I could not wait to reunite with Allison Williams, Amie Donald and a bunch of other cast members and get to meet new cast members that you’ll see in the film. And I loved that we filmed the first one in New Zealand and we also got to film the second one there. It’s so beautiful there, and the people are just so lovely and you could do something new every day. I could not wait to bring Gerard’s [Johnstone] amazing vision to life, again.

What can we expect from Cady in M3GAN 2.0? Is there anything specifically about her relationships with characters compared to the first movie that have changed?
Violet: Well, in the first one, Cady lost her parents, and not only did she lose her parents, but she also lost her best friend, M3GAN. And Cady is obviously a little bit older now in the new film, and her and Gemma are still working on their relationship. Cady just wants to trust that Gemma will be there when she needs her the most. Cady also does Aikido [in M3GAN 2.0], which is awesome, and soccer, and I also play soccer in real life. So, that’s pretty cool.

Violet: Cady wants to give M3GAN a second chance. Everyone tells Cady that M3GAN is just a bunch of ones and zeros, she doesn’t have feelings. But Cady sees way beyond that, so, she tries to convince everyone that M3GAN can go face to face with Amelia, who is a new character that I can’t wait for you all to see.

Your sister, Madeleine, is no stranger to the horror genre as well. Have you learned a lot from her in terms of acting?
Violet: She’s given me such great advice along the way. I don’t know if there’s anything horror specific, but I remember there was one time when I was super young on The Haunting of Hill House, she was like, “you might see some scary things on set, but just know it’s all fake and special effects.” But she’s given me amazing advice just in general for acting.

Without giving away any spoilers, how would you describe M3GAN 2.0 compared to M3GAN?
Violet: It is so different. I mean, they have similarities, but, I would say, everything in the first film is also in the second film, but it’s better and bigger. M3GAN is faster, stronger, and she can fly. That’s not happening in the first film. And there’s new dance moves. So, keep your eyes peeled. It’s going to be a roller coaster and such an adventure. And I would say whatever you think you’re going to expect, that’s not at all what’s going to happen.
