We caught up with Toronto R&B artist Aqyila whose debut EP, For The Better, is out today on all streaming platforms. Aqyila’s viral 2021 debut release, “Vibe for Me (Bob for Me),” garnered over 10 million streams worldwide and landed her first JUNO Award nomination for ‘Contemporary R&B Recording of the Year’ in 2022. She also served as an ambassador for TikTok’s #RnB month in November 2022.
We asked Aqyila about the release of her debut EP, the creation process, her musical sound, and more.
Check out our conversation below.
How excited are you to release your debut EP?
Aqyila: I am super elated to be releasing my debut EP, For The Better. With this being my first body of work, I can’t wait to see everyone’s reactions to it and where life takes me next. So many experiences and opportunities have come along the way and it’s only the beginning.
What can you tell us about the process of making this EP?
Aqyila: So many of the songs on this EP were created during my trip to Los Angeles. I had the time of my life down there! So much creativity flowed within those sessions and I feel so blessed to have been able to create music with such talented producers and songwriters.
When people listen to your music, what are you hoping they get out of it?
Aqyila: I hope For The Better takes anyone who listens to it on a journey. Through moments of joy, heartbreak and self-discovery. Growth is what I want people to take away from this project.

What is your favorite track on the EP?
Aqyila: My favourite track from the EP has to be “Hello.” It gives me such a warm feeling when I listen to it. It’s so personal to me that I fall in love with the song all over again whenever I sing it. A close second would have to be “Moving Like That.” The beat is such a vibe and the bridge makes me feel like a boss!
How would you describe your music?
Aqyila: I would describe my current music as a mix of feel good, reflective and empowering.
What advice would give to you aspring musicians?
Aqyila: My advice to aspiring musicians would be step out of your comfort zone every once in a while, be open to new ideas and have a great team to back you. When the people around you genuinely want the best for you, it makes this career even more fun!
