We caught up with Montreal-born singer-songwriter laye who recently released her newest track “blue” on March 24. The single was co-written by Cici Ward (Cheat Codes, Lil Huddy, GAYLE) with production helmed by Stevie Aiello (30 Seconds to Mars, Starset). laye joined the music scene in 2018 followed by her 2019 debut album lonesome, which was created over the course of four years. Her alt-flavoured pop music, accompanied by sultry, playful vocals, has garnered over 17 million global streams.
We asked laye all about her new single, the creative process, and recording the song in studio. Check out our Q&A below.
How would you describe the overall sound of your latest single, “blue”?
laye: I think the overall sound is dreamy, melancholic, and nostalgic.
Is there a particular message(s) you wanted to express with this single?
laye: Personally, I just wanted the song to really embody the guilt and regret of losing someone you cared about; for it to be a reflective piece on a lost love with a nostalgic angle.
Can you tell us about the creative process when it came to putting the song together?
laye: It was a concept I had wanted to write about for a while, and I had actually done a voice memo of the hook that morning in the Airbnb I was staying at in LA. From there, I brought it to one of my sessions where I shared it with the people I collaborated with on the rest of the song. It felt good right away. Sometimes demos need a lot of work to get them to the right place, but I feel like this song really came together in a single session. I feel like that about most of the songs on this project, actually.
“blue” was produced by Stevie Aiello. What was it like working with him in studio?
laye: I love working with him! I used to really look for piano-centric sessions but I’ve recently been on a guitar wave and Stevie’s definitely the guy for that. But he can also just do anything; super talented dude. I’d worked with both him and Cici [Ward] before and it’s just always a good time working with them.
What are you hoping listeners get when they listen to your music?
laye: I always hope that a song just resonates with someone in any type of way. It doesn’t necessarily have to be lyrically. Production and the feel of a song can leave such an impact on a person. You can hear the very first note of a song you love and be transported back to a moment, or a feeling, and I love that. And I hope my music can be that or do that for someone.
