We recently spoke with pop artist ZAVA about his music including his newest single “Wrong” out now on streaming platforms.

Check out what ZAVA had to say below.

When people listen to ZAVA, what are you hoping they get out of it?

That they experience a feeling that leads them closer to their true self, their soul. My music has always been just that to me – leading me to discover who I am and I love sharing my experiences with others. If someone resonates with a lyric, or a chord progression brings up an emotion, or the rhythm moves their body and whatever vibe they experience makes them feel a little more like themselves (love, joy, peace, light) – that is what I hope they get out of it.

How would you describe the sound of your music?

Pop af lol. I’ve always loved pop music. There are many influences because I love and am inspired by so many artists and genres. I actually am noticing my sound evolving as I do the same, but most of the music I’ve put out has been living in the disco/80s pop/y2k eras. I’m excited to see where it goes next!

Who would you say are some of your musical influences?

There are so many! Spice Girls were the biggest influence from my childhood. I loved everything about them and still do. Whitney Houston because she is the greatest of all time. George Michael, Queen, ABBA. Current influences are Jessie Ware, Chlöe x Halle, Tinashe, and Victoria Monét.

Did you always know that music was something you wanted to pursue?

As cliché as it sounds, for as long as I can remember I loved to sing, dance, and perform. I have a cool story for you because I believe this was the night that solidified it for me. So it’s August 1998, I’m 8 years old, and the Spice Girls are touring the world. The Spice World Tour comes to Kansas and it is my first concert ever. My mom and I get to our seats and a security guy from their team comes up and explains that each of the girls have a solo song in the middle of the show and Baby Spice, who was my favorite, always sings her song to a young boy from the crowd. My mom and I honestly didn’t believe him, but sure enough he came back in the middle of the show, took me backstage where I met the other girls, and then I joined Baby Spice on stage where she proceeded to sing a song to me and kiss me on the cheek. I always say looking out at the thousands of faces in the crowd and being up on that stage was the night I knew I wanted to be a pop star.

What advice would you give to other aspiring musicians?

I am still learning this myself, but I had a teacher tell me this once and I’ve never forgotten it: effort + practice + consistency = success (and “success” can be whatever you want it to be).

Who is ZAVA as an artist?

The lightning bolt is the symbol that embodies what ZAVA is to me. Lightning is powerful, it strikes, and it pierces through the darkness. That is the energy I feel as an artist. The world is on fire and there is so much darkness and it has always felt right to be a light in the darkness and to sing songs that remind people of the good in the world too. The good in themselves.

How excited are you to release new music?

I’m currently experimenting with new sounds, new textures to my voice, and exploring myself more and I am having an absolute blast! How that transmutes into new music is exciting in ways I haven’t felt before. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it!
