We spoke with Toronto-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist GRAE about her new single and music video “Room in the Dessert.” The single is available to stream on all platforms, and is off her upcoming debut LP, Whiplash, due out April 15, 2022. Check out what GRAE had to say below.
When people listen to your music, what are you hoping they get out of it?
Whatever they need at that moment.
How would you describe the sound of your music?
Indie pop/new wave
Who would you say are some of your musical influences?
Robert Smith from The Cure and Tame Impala are massive influences on the music I’m currently creating/releasing.
Did you always know that music was something you wanted to pursue?
I knew from around the age of 10 that music was something I wanted to do. I was always singing/writing and decided to take it more seriously when I turned 18.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
I know the industry can seem very daunting, but if you have a passion for music, keep going no matter what roadblocks may come your way.
What is your favorite song to perform live?
I haven’t had the chance to perform many of my new songs live unfortunately, but ‘Permanent Maniac‘ is always fun, and honestly ‘Room In The Desert’ as well!
Can you describe your creative process when you’re writing new music?
Lyrics come first for me when creating, I typically write down everything I’m feeling on a document/piece of paper and structure the song from there. Then I figure out what I’ve been inspired by and the direction I’d like to take the song.
