We chatted with the duo about their new music, their sound and much more. Check out our chat below.
What can you tell us about your debut album, Songs About Girls Like You?
Songs About Girls Like You is a compilation of songs that thread through the ups and downs of a relationship. From falling in love, to falling apart, it covers every aspect one might encounter when in love. Every song represents a different stage of a relationship, and we ordered the album like a story. We really like that it reflects that every beginning is an ending as well, because the album can be listened to as a never-ending cycle. We wrote the songs throughout a 3-yearperiod of time, and we are so proud of how it came out.
When people listen to your music, what are you hoping they get out of it?
We are hoping that the songs make them feel happy and positive. Some of the songs, despite their heart wrenching lyrics, have such great grooves – it’s all about healing and happiness for this album. Although there are some sadder parts of relationships, we tried to make the album feel as positive and fun as possible. It’s all about good vibes over here!
How would you describe the sound of your music?
We would say our music can be described as a combination of blue-eyed soul, funk, pop, and disco all in one!
Who would you say are some of your musical influences?
We have so many influences that have played a part in our sound! Definitely legacy artists like Elton John, Bee Gees, Queen, and Hall & Oates have played a huge role in our inspirations. As for modern artists, we’d say Bruno Mars and Charlie Puth really inspire us right now!
Did you both always know that music was something you wanted to pursue?
Yes, we both joined a band together in 8th grade and have been making music ever since. We both made a pact to continue music together despite our old band splitting up! Stephen and I knew we wanted to pursue being artists ever since we hit the stage together back in 2007! So we’ve been writing, singing, and performing together for 15 years!
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
Stephen: Never give up, practice, always follow your gut, and continue to remain a fan of music.
Greg: Always write, sing, and perform what’s in your heart. In a society full of trends, your heart is the only “algorithm” that matters. Your heart & spirit are the ultimate compass for how to express & share your gift with the world – always be listening to it!
What is your favorite song to perform live?
We both love performing “Girls Like You” – it’s so fun to sing live!
Can you describe your creative process when you’re writing new music?
We usually either come up with an instrumental track, and write a melody to that, or we come in with a melody, and make the instrumental track. Typically, we write lyrics last, as we subscribe that “melody is king.” After we feel we have the right melody, we write the lyrics & title to that. We feel that the melody is the most important aspect because that’s the thing that listeners will gravitate towards the most.
What has been the best advice someone has given you about music?
Stephen: The best advice I heard is “no one really knows what they’re doing, so just make sure you’re having fun.”
Greg: The best advice I have ever heard about music is that “silence is the most powerful instrument you can use.”
Which musician(s) would you like to collaborate with in the future?
Stephen: For me, I would say John Mayer, because he’s been such an influence for me. I would love to make music with him!
Greg: I know this might sound super strange, but I’d love to write with Burt Bacharach. He is one of my ALL TIME favorite songwriters. His melodies have stood the test of time. I would do anything to meet him.
