We chatted with Hong Kong born and Canadian raised indie-folk rocker Tennyson King about his new album, Good Company, which is out now on streaming platforms. We asked Tennyson all about the new album, his sound, music influences and more. Check out our conversation below.

What can you tell us about your new album?

Tennyson King (TK): The new album is called Good Company. It’s a collection of songs I started writing between 2018 – 2020. All the ideas came from voicenotes of little demos I would record while I was on tour and traveling in places like China, Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, South East Asia and Europe. I recorded it back in 2020 at the start of COVID with Juno nominee producer Ross Hayes Citrullo at RHC Studios in Toronto. It features talented musicians such as Darcy Yates (Bahamas), Rainey Smith, Faye Blais, Nathaniel Edgar, Sam Keating and Nicholas Otway. I love all these songs and had a blast making this record. I hope when people put it on, they feel some good company wherever they are in the world.

When people listen to the new album, what are you hoping they get out of it?

TK: I hope when people listen to the record, they feel some good company wherever they are in the world. I hope that they get inspiration for self reflection, for travel, adventure and I think they’ll learn a bit more about my life and my experiences. At the end of the day, music and creating music is my therapy so I hope to some degree, it has a therapeutic effect for all my listeners as well.

How would you describe the sound of your music?

TK: The soundtrack to your next road trip. My music is a mix of indie folk, folk pop, and rock with a touch of soul.

Who would you say are some of your musical influences?

TK: John Mayer, Bahamas, Jack Johnson, D’Angelo, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Allen Stone

Did you always know that music was something you wanted to pursue?

TK: Not really. I always loved music, always listened to it, and was playing music to some degree. I thought it would be great to be a “rockstar” when I was younger, but it was also among many young childhood dreams like being a stunt person, an actor, or anything “cool” I saw on the TV.  It was until after university and traveling around a bit, that I started thinking about what I wanted to contribute to the world and how I wanted to connect with people that I realized music was the path and something I’ve always been crossing every so often.

What is your favourite song to perform live?

TK: Currently, my favourite song to perform live as a solo act is my song “Share This Moment.”
