We recently go to chat with actor, artist, musician and writer Taylor Blackwell about her new music video, her career in music and more. Taylor’s new album, Memory of Haroldine, is out now and includes 10 original tracks where Taylor sings and plays guitar and accordion. It also features actor/musician Fin Argus and was produced by Sharp/Shock’s Davey Warsop.

What’s it like to direct your own music videos?
TB: Quite the challenge, but I had the most fun! For my first music video ‘b.s. poetry’, I was directing, producing, acting, and trying to play the accordion! Many hats. Luckily, I had the great luck of getting Chase Cope as my co-director/DP/editor. We made an excellent team! Chase was the DP for my band the tenth’s video “I Saw A Ghost” (directed by Meghan Marshall), so we had some experience working together. I was also fortunate to have the help of many friends. Everyone came together to bring my vision to life; I’m very blessed.
What was it like working with Dempsey, Brady, Bebe and Nolan?
TB: They are some of my greatest friends in the world, so having them in the video was very special. Dempsey is a brilliant actor, and nailed the character. Trying to edit the video was incredibly difficult because I had so much amazing footage of him. Brady and Bebe light up the screen, they have such a presence. Nolan only makes a brief appearance in the video, but it meant so much that he was a part of it!
Who is Taylor Blackwell as an artist?
TB: Taylor Blackwell as an artist is just like Taylor Blackwell as a human – maybe slightly sappier and more poetic. My songs are essentially my diary entries set to music. I try to be as authentic as I can to what I was feeling and capture little moments in time.
Pop punk has become more and more popular. Why do you think this is the case?
TB: Ooh, I’m not sure. I like to think that my generation has a lot to say, and a lot we’re fighting for. Punk is a great tool for that. I love pop punk because it feels both new and nostalgic simultaneously.
When people listen to your music, what are you hoping they get out of it?
TB: I hope people will connect to the album in their own individual way. That said, the overall message is that life is short, tomorrow is never promised. All we have is today, and making the most of today often means letting go of the past.
