We recently spoke with Tennessee-native pop/hip-hop artist Shockley about his new 6-track EP, Nice to Meet You, out now. Check out what he had to say about his music.

How excited are you to release this new EP?

I was super excited, but not so much for the project itself as the entire journey we’re embarking on. This mixtape was the introduction to the story that I’m trying to tell. It was the perfect way to honor where I’ve been and foreshadow where I’m going. I’ve got so much to say, and this was my way of saying, “hey pass me the mic.”

What were some goals in mind with this new music?

I think the biggest goal was big picture. I’ve got an incredible team that understands my long-term vision and this was our way of beginning to paint the picture.

When people listen to Shockley, what are you hoping they get out of it?

I hope people feel that thing that reminds us what makes being a human special. We all have those certain songs that take us places only music can, and if I can be on somebody’s list of “those songs”… that’s such a win.

How would you describe the sound of your music?

It’s me. I think people can understand my influences, but I’m not trying to be anybody else. I’ve got a story that is only mine and can only be told through my sound.

Who would you say are some of your musical influences?

There is a lot that stretches across eras and genres, but I think the biggest ones are Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, Michael Jackson, Boyz II Men…I could keep going but I’ll stop there.

Did you always know that music was something you wanted to pursue?

My dad actually traveled and sang gospel music all my life, and eventually came off the road and owned a recording studio. It’s funny how immersed I’ve always been in music and didn’t really openly admit “Imma do this too.” The reality is I’ve never had another choice, in the best way. It’s just who I am.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

I think I’m an aspiring musician so I’m probably not the person to ask…but to people who are just diving in, I would say stay curious and open. Forcing the story doesn’t write a good story. Good stories are about the journey. Not the beginning and the end.
