We recently caught up with 19 year old singer-songwritter Rowan Drake who just dropped his new emotionally charged single, “Hey Little Sister.” Already a fan favorite with more than 250K views on TikTok so  far, the powerful track stands as the latest in a series of singles including “2 People” and “Abandonment Issues.”

Rowan writes, produces and performs his own music, and shares snippets of his songwriting process on his popular TikTok account. We asked Rowan about his music single, his musical sound, influences, and lots more. Check out our conversation below!

How exciting is it for you to release new music?

Rowan Drake (RD): Releasing music is always both thrilling and terrifying. Creating art is such a sacred thing and when you finally release it to the world it can be bittersweet. On the one hand you finally get to share it with the people who need it seemingly as much as you do. On the other hand it is now open to all the scrutiny and judgment that can so easily leave a song biter to think about. Overall though, I am incredibly ready for “Hey Little Sister” to officially exist in the world.

What can you tell us about “Hey Little Sister”?

RD: “Hey Little Sister” is a song of remorse felt by myself for not being there for my little sister in our childhood. It’s a message that I wish I could’ve communicated to her many years ago. It’s touches on the domestic violence that filled our lives at that time.

When people listen to your music, what are you hoping they get out of it?

RD: A moment of emotional clarity; a moment to allow ourselves to feel whatever has been begging to come to the surface.

How would you describe the sound of your music?

RD: An attempt to communicate a collection of beautiful and unique moments I’ve experienced in my life shrouded in ambient sounds and dynamic intricacies meant to bring you into my musical world for a brief few minutes.

Did you always know that music was something you wanted to pursue?

RD: I always knew music would be a large part of my life and one of the ways I communicated. It wasn’t until a little later in life that it consumed me to this extent.

Who would you say are some of your musical influences?

RD: So many. I grew up on Van Morrison, The Grateful Dead, Mazzy Star, and many more. Now, I listen to Bon Iver, Radiohead, Justin Beiber, The Neighbourhood, and many more.
