Essex-based vocalist and songwriter Bee Arnold recently dropped her first track of the year with the funk-fuelled single, “Toxic,” available now on all streaming platforms. With bold lyricism and funk-styled guitars, the single explores the power of having a hold over someone, despite your bad traits telling them to leave. Since the release of her debut EP in 2018, Bee has worked with the likes of Ironik and performed at Camden Assembly, Brentwood Festival, Swanbourne Festival and more.
We spoke with Bee Arnold about her new music, sound, musical influences and lots more. Check out our conversation below.
How excited are you to be releasing new music?
Bee Arnold (BA): You have no idea how excited I am. I held back from releasing for various reasons for quite a while and now I feel like I’m back in the game and ready to show everyone what I’ve been working on.
What can you tell us about your new single “Toxic”?
BA: “Toxic” is a fun track that is meant to make you feel strong, powerful and sassy. It’s a song that’s written about you being the person with so many toxic traits but you are just too irresistible for your partner to let go of.
When people listen to your music, what are you hoping they get out of it?
BA: I just want people to enjoy the music. I write songs that I hope make people feel good and put a smile on their faces. Everybody loves a song that makes them want to dance and have a good time, and that’s what I try to do with my music.
How would you describe the sound of your music?
BA: I think my sound is very Pop. My voice alone is extremely poppy and then the music I love and create is all Pop music.
Who would you say are some of your musical influences?
BA: A lot of people can’t tell straight away after listening to my new single ‘Toxic” that my main influences are Dua Lipa and Doja Cat. Other artists who have a massive influence on my music and sound are Ariana Grande, Anne Marie and Mabel.
Did you always know that music was something you wanted to pursue?
BA: YES! I have always had a massive passion for music and have always been exposed to it as my dad was, and still is, an excellent DJ. I have always loved to sing and as I have grown older my passion and hunger for music has only grown stronger.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
BA: Keep pushing. You may feel knocked down or defeated by many obstacles that you will face but it’s all about trusting the process. Anything worth having isn’t easy so keep at it.
Do you have a favourite song to perform live?
BA: This is a hard one as I’m so indecisive my mind is constantly changing! I think “Chances” might be my favourite as the song was one of the first tracks that I wrote where I felt my sound was really coming together. It’s always fun to perform a track everyone knows the words to as well so this being one of the old ones, it is normally great fun to interact with the audience with.
Can you describe your creative process when you’re writing new music?
BA: This does change, but mostly I tend to come up with my best melodies and lyrics in the car. I’ll normally pull over to stick my phone’s voice recorder on and record myself singing any ideas I have. Then I’ll put everything together when I get home and have my computer to hand.
What has been the best advice someone has given you about music?
BA: Believe in yourself. I really struggled with this for a long time, but how can you expect others to believe in you if you are not willing to believe in you first? It’s a hard thing to do and still, I have my wobbles, but when you believe in yourself it allows you to achieve so much more.
Which musician would you like to collaborate with in the future?
BA: There are so many, but if I had to pick one, I would love to collab with Dua Lipa. She is such an inspiration to me and my music and I am a massive fan too, so would love the chance to write something with her and see her writing process.
