We had the chance to chat with rising Canadian pop artist Olivia Lunny. Lunny is the 2019 winner of the Canadian TV reality music competition The Launch.
Here’s what she had to say about her music.
How excited are you to release your debut album?
OL: I’m beyond excited to put this project out! I’ve never released a grouping of songs like this before so I feel that listeners will truly get an insight into who I am as an artist! This album is an authentic representation of the different sides to my artistry!
When people listen to Olivia Lunny, there are a lot of sounds/genres happening. Was that the plan?
OL: For me, as a new artist my goal is to not limit myself to one genre or specific sound. Although I create in a way that is cohesive, I let the music guide itself when it comes to the writing process. Some of my songs are slower and more acoustic based, others- upbeat and more eleco-pop based. My plan is to keep experimenting with the music I make and to connect with my listeners through those lyrics and songs!
What is your mindset like when you’re writing music? Do you have a routine or zone you get into?
OL: My writing process has always been very spontaneous. Throughout the day I’ll write down lyric ideas or phrases on my phone or hum a melody on a voice memo. Sometimes when I sit down to write a song one will come out in it’s in entirety, other times I’ll write a hook or verse idea! In my experience, the best songs have usually come about in the most organic sessions and moments!
Who are some of your influences music wise?
OL: I’ve always loved John Mayer and Fleetwood Mac. My present day favourites would be Ed Sheeran, SG Lewis and Ellie Goulding!
What was it like working with Boi-1da and YogiTheProducer?
OL: It was incredible to work with such talented established producers. It was also very inspiring to see them in their process and in creation mode! I’m so grateful for the opportunity to work with them and thrilled with the final songs we came up with!
When people listen to your music, what are you hoping they get out of it?
OL: I hope my music can become the soundtrack to peoples lives. As a listener I’ve always gravitated towards music that makes me feel comfortable. If I can be that for others that’s all I can hope for!
Olivia Lunny’s new album will be out on July 9, 2021. Pre-save the album here.
