Genre-busting artist Valerie June’s 2021 album, The Moon and Stars: Prescriptions For Dreamers, was one of 2021’s most celebrated releases. The GRAMMY-nominated artist is now expanding the album’s scope with a special deluxe edition featuring 23 tracks: The album’s 14 original tracks, 6 reimagined, acoustic versions and 3 brand-new covers. We recently got to speak with Valerie June about the album’s deluxe version, her musical sound, influences and creative process. Check out our conversation below.
How excited are you to release the deluxe version of The Moon and Stars: Prescriptions?
Valerie June (VJ): I’m very excited to share The Moon and Stars: Prescriptions for Dreamers Deluxe Edition! It’s especially the perfect release for these pandemic days that have hindered most artists ability to tour and visit towns around the world. More songs equals more for fans to discover as we navigate these precarious times.
How would you describe the sound of your music?
VJ: The sound of my music is ethereal. Most of the songs begin in a singer-songwriter style and then are immersed in layered voices and symphonic sounds.
Who would you say are some of your musical influences?
VJ: I am influenced by every genre. For this album, Etta James was a huge influence. Clearly, Carla Thomas and Mavis Staples are living influences on not just my music, but the way I envision sharing my music with the world. They are both such sweet souls and joy hearts. I hope to be more and more like them as I follow the path of music.
Did you always know that music was something you wanted to pursue?
VJ: Yes, I always knew I wanted to be a singer. Playing instruments is a separate thing. I never thought I would be a great instrumentalist because I started pretty late in my life. I was born singing, but only started playing instruments when I was in my early 20s.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
VJ: It’s okay for musicians to have goals and plans for events they hope to play for or people they hope to work with. Make a wish list! Believe it can come true! Perfect your craft and be patient. Everyone gets a moment to shine, it is just are you ready when your moment appears. The only way to be ready is to focus your energy on your art and wishes! Believe.
What is your favorite song to perform live?
VJ: This is a very difficult question. “Somebody to Love” with my baby banjolele is always fun. That instrument is so playful! All instruments have different moods and vibes.
Can you describe your creative process when you’re writing new music?
VJ: Generally, I am not planning or sitting to write a song. I’m up and cleaning the house, watering the plants, walking to or from someplace, or sometimes even asleep and dreaming. I will hear a voice singing a melody or a full line of a song. I’ll sing that line again and again while I’m doing whatever task I was in the midst of. Once it’s strong enough and I’ve developed either a verse or chorus, then I will sit with an instrument to try to put music to the part I was hearing. I will try different instruments until I find the one that matches that particular piece. It often starts with the voice. Sometimes, it will happen with an instrument first though.
What has been the best advice someone has given you about music?
VJ: I was told to perfect my craft! I’m still working on that. It’s a life’s work.
