We recently spoke with DIY artist fats’e about his new music including his latest album staring at the ceiling, out now.

Here’s what fats’e had to say.

How excited are you about staring at the ceiling?

I’m glad SATC is finally out and the response has been great but since I worked on it for years I’m more excited to work on new music and collaborate with new people!

What do you think about all the genre bending happening music right
now?

I love how so many genres are coming together right now. It’s an exciting time for music and I feel like a bunch of new genres are about to be birthed out of all these combinations of sounds happening. I love the idea of smashing a bunch of genres together into a cohesive new sound which was my intention with SATC and I want to keep pushing the boundaries as much I can with new music.

When people listen to your music, what are you hoping they get out of
it?

I hope people can feel a connection to my lyrics and singing which I think is the first thing most people pay attention to. I write most of my lyrics from a very personal place so I hope people can relate to the experiences I’m describing.

How would you describe the sound of your music?

The sound of my music has definitely evolved over time but my latest album is a combination of high-energy pop-punk and slower midwest-emo with a modern production twist using 808’s for the bass and glitchy production.

Who would you say are some of your musical influences?

My influences are kind of all over the place but some of my biggest overall influences are Title Fight, James Blake, Lil Wayne, Burial, From First to Last and Frank Ocean.

Did you always know that music was something you wanted to pursue?

Ever since I was a kid I’ve been fascinated with music in general and started playing keyboard around 5 or 6 and around that time would regularly read biographies of artists like Jim Hendrix and Kurt Cobain and dream of being a ‘rockstar’ when I grew up.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

If you want to be a full-time musician you have to work everyday on music and improving your playing/singing/producing or whatever it is you are pursuing and on top of that make as many musician friends online as possible and collaborate with everyone you can!
