We chatted with the band Charming Liars who recently released an epic cover of the classic “September” by Earth, Wind, & Fire. The trio consists of Kiliyan Maguire (vocals), Karnig Manoukian (guitar, production), and Mike Kruger (bass). Check out what they had to say below.
How did this cover of “September” come to be?
We were driving through L.A. and switched the radio channel to 101.1, all the best classics! After listening to the Earth, Wind, & Fire version, we wondered what we could do to make it unique. It’s one of the greatest song of the last 50 years and we wanted to release a cover, so it made sense!
What has the band been up to during these unprecedented times?
We’ve been in the studio making music for a lot of it. It’s also allowed us to spend more time with our loved ones.
What can you tell us about the band’s influences music wise?
Influences for us are all over the place. From classics in the rock genre to industrial 80s. Some cool new wave artists to modern day punk. From nu metal to pop.
How excited are you to be releasing new music?
We’re always excited to move forward and release new music and see how people react.
When people listen to your music, what are you hoping they get out of it?
We get asked that a lot and the answer always seems to be “whatever the listener feels is exactly what we want them to get out of it.” No two people are the same, and we hope listening to our music makes you FEEL!
