We had the chance to chat with Alt Pop artist Bishop Ivy about his new track “the park.” Bishop Ivy’s music can be described as a mix of Muse meets James Blake.

Check out what he had to say about his music.

How excited are you to release this new single?

BI: Extremely. I think “the park” demonstrates the best of my singing, songwriting, and production. I love the way it sounds and I love the lyrics backing it. It’s one of my best overall packages of a song.

Why did you start performing music?

BI: I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. I didn’t have a reason for that; I just loved doing it. I wanted to extend that, so I eventually learned to play instruments, then learned writing and production, and so on. I’ve found over the years I actually do less and less performing, and more and more writing. That’s the process I’m the most excited about.

What do you think about all the genre bending happening in music right now?

BI: I think it’s neutral. A song that combines opposing genres can be great or lackluster depending on the execution. All of my favorite artists pull from seemingly different musical styles and make it work amazingly, so I definitely see it as a tool to make great music. It’s one method we have to allow our current list of genres to evolve.

When people listen to your music, what are you hoping they get out of it?

BI: I think I fall in the category of headphone music. It’s made for listening on one’s own, and special attention is paid to the sonic and lyrical details. I’m hoping people find it as relaxing and ethereal as I find my favorite songs are. It is meant to have a cinematic quality to it.

Who is Bishop Ivy as an artist?

BI: I’m a pop artist first and foremost. I want my music to connect instantly and not have any prerequisites to understand. At the same time, I want to involve more avant-garde elements in the production, harmonies, lyrics, everything besides the melody (for now). The music is supposed to be intriguing on the first listen, and invite further investigation. And all things have a dream-like quality to them.
