We chatted with Italian Canadian Alt Pop artist Alessandro Montelli about his new single “Whistle song” and much more. Check out our conversation below.

How excited are you to release this single?
Alessandro Montelli (AM): Oh, I’m so stoked about it! I love releasing music. It is a great feeling and this will be my first single of 2022!!

When people listen to your music, what are you hoping they get out of it?
AM: Honestly I just hope they can relate whether it is to the melancholy or the sadness in some of the songs, or to the desire for connection rising from a place where you always felt misunderstood and like the underdog.

Who would you say are some of your musical influences?
AM: Twenty One Pilots, Maneskin, Linkin Park, Ed Sheeran.

Did you always know that music was something you wanted to pursue?AM: At the beginning I was just pushed into piano lessons by my parents, and it was more like a discipline, something you know to keep me out of the streets. Then years later it became a real passion and desire for expressing myself by performing on stage and writing songs. At that point I knew I really wanted this to be my career.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
AM: Take it day by day, have higher goals but less expectations. Don’t stress yourself out, but learn how to be the best at what you do!

What is your favorite song to perform live?
AM: Usually a cover song called “Il Mondo”, which is a cover I do of a very old italian pop classic. But lately I really enjoy playing my new single “Whistle song”. I love the darkness of it too.

Can you describe your creative process when you’re writing new music?
AM: Of course! I would usually sit with the guitar and play around with some chords. And come up with lyrics, even though most times lyrics come to me first I would say with a melody, so I would have to write them down on my iphone and record a vocal note, and then try to work on it later on. It’s pretty amazing when that happens, because it doesn’t occur every single day, but the moment you write a song and you’re super inspired feels amazing!

What has been the best advice someone has given you about music?
AM: Learn the business. Cuz it’s more than just talent or a good voice (unfortunately).

Which musician would you like to collaborate with in the future?
AM: There’s a few for sure. I’m trying to collaborate more with local musicians in Toronto and I would say it’s going well!!But it would be a dream to work with Mike Shinoda from LP, or Avril Lavigne and Sum 41, basically my adolescence in a nutshell <3.
