We chatted with alien-pop duo 4 Minutes Later (4ML) about their newest single “Holding on to Nothing,” out now on all streaming platforms.
What can you tell us about this new single?
‘Holding on to Nothing’ certainly comes from a place of sadness, but when we decided to make it an up tempo song with an 80s vibe, it certainly changed the vibe and gave it exactly what it needed. We were very lucky to bring in Paul Gigliotti from wave to co-write and produce this track. You can definitely hear his influence on the song which I think blended really well with the usual 4ML vibe.
Who would you say are some of your musical influences?
That’s a very wide variety of artists. We have a very broad taste in music and take influence from everything we listen to. Some of the ones that stand out though are The Beatles, Aerosmith, Ryan Tedder, Jessia, and we have been lucky enough to work with some incredible artists we look up to as well such as Laur Elle.
Did you always know that music was something you wanted to pursue?
From the first time I heard music I was drawn to it. I remember the first time I heard my dad play guitar and sign it was something I wanted to do. I never thought that I would actually be able to do it though.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
Be authentic and stay true to yourself. You have to make music for yourself first and you have to love what you do. It’s why 4ML has such a wide variety of genres in our music – we have to make the music for us and what we feel like writing at the time.
Can you describe your creative process when you’re writing new music?
It is different every time. Some songs come together in minutes and others take weeks or even months. The only thing that really stays consistent is that we write from real life experience and from an honest place. We are very lucky that we have an amazing team of engineers/producers and writers to work with that continually keep us inspired and motivated to write music we are proud of.
