We chatted with artist IAMEVE about her new music video for “Unnerving” off her upcoming EP, Archetype, due out on October 22, 2021.

Check out what IAMEVE had to say about her music and projects.

What can you tell us about Mamas in Music?

Mamas in Music is a group whose mission is to support women struggling to balance their music careers with being incredible moms. Our aim is to help provide resources that make it easier – and possible – for mamas to keep making music, to create a thriving collective community, and to dismantle the stereotypes of motherhood in entertainment. It’s a long road that will require massive structural change and the involvement of other organizations in the industry. But it starts with our collective voices standing up for these changes. We have a number of ideas being hatched, but being that we have ambitious plans, and myself and co-founder Mary Leay (UK) are new moms, we have been giving ourselves plenty of grace as we look for partner organizations that can really help us with the larger picture. In the meantime, we continue welcoming women into the conversation to support, inspire, and hold space for one another.

What can people expect with your single “Unnerving”?

To be unnerved… I think? The song and video are both incredibly raw and vulnerable, threaded with conflicting emotions about the devastating state of our world. Writing and recording this as a new mother for me was my way to express this feeling of clamoring past our darkest human moments to reach for hope and a most vulnerable kind of love.

When people listen to your music, what are you hoping they get out of it?

This collection of songs and a lot of what I write about is exploring various archetypes that we inhabit as we move through life: mother, inner child, explorer, mystic, huntress, etc. My hope is that they tunnel into the soul in some fashion and connect our collective voices.

How would you describe the sound of your music?

Whimsical, ethereal, haunting, playful, emotional… Always a hard one for me because I don’t feel like I cater to one specific sound, but I suppose there is generally a very cinematic quality to the sound and I tend towards a combination of electronics and organic instruments.

Who would you say are some of your musical influences?

Motown, Peter Gabriel, Beatles, Kate Bush, Bowie, Bjork, Debussy, Ravel and a lot of old school jazz.

Did you always know that music was something you wanted to pursue?

Always. I didn’t grow up in a musical family, so it took me a while to find my way to digging my heels in musically, but I spent a lot of time singing my feelings to the trees growing up. It was always my way of expressing myself and falling into myself.
