We spoke with Maeve Jinkings and Camila Márdila on the Popternative show about their film Charcoal which is making its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

The Brazilian and Argentine film also stars César Bordon, Jean Costa, Romulo Braga, Pedro Wagner and Aline Marta. Charcoal is set in a remote area in São Paulo’s countryside where a rural family who lives beside a charcoal factory accepts a proposal to host a mysterious foreigner. Their home soon becomes a hideout as the so-called guest happens to be a highly wanted drug lord. The mother, her husband and child will have to learn how to share the same roof with this stranger, while keeping up appearances of an unchanged peasant routine.

In our interview, Maeve and Camila talk about their experience at this year’s TIFF, working with director Carolina Markowitz, the dark and comedic sides of Charcoal and much more.
