FX’s Shōgun today announced new and returning cast for the second season as well as the directors and writers lined up for the next chapter. Season 2 will be set over a decade after the events of the first season. Shōgun Season 2 will begin production in Vancouver in January.
New cast include Asami Mizukawa (Smiling Matryoshka, Rebooting) as Aya, Masataka Kubota (13 Assassins, First Love) as Hyūga, Sho Kaneta (Ultraman Arc, High & Low: The Worst X) as Hidenobu, Takaaki Enoki (Ultraman Orb: The Origin Saga, Aibou: Tokyo Detective Duo) as Lord Ito, and Jun Kunimura (Kill Bill: Vol. 1, Kate) as Gōda.
Returning cast are Hiroyuki Sanada as Toranaga, Cosmo Jarvis as Blackthorne, Fumi Nikaidô as Ochiba, Shinnosuke Abe as Buntaro, Hiroto Kanai as Omi, Yoriko Dôguchi as Kiri, Tommy Bastow as Alvito, Yuko Miyamoto as Gin, Eita Okuno as Saeki, and Yuka Kouri as Kiku.
Two directors from the Season 1, Hiromi Kamata and Takeshi Fukunaga will direct on Season 2, with Anthony Byrne (MobLand, Say Nothing), Kate Herron (Loki, Sex Education) and Justin Marks (Counterpart) set to direct episodes. The writers for Season 2 are Rachel Kondo, Justin Marks, Shannon Goss, Matt Lambert, Maegan Houang, Emily Yoshida, Caillin Puente and Sofie Somoroff.
In Season 1, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada) fought for his survival as his enemies in the Council of Regents united against him. When a mysterious European ship was found marooned in a nearby village, its English pilot John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) shared vital strategic secrets with Toranaga that tipped the scales of power in his favour to win a century-defining civil war.
Shōgun Season 2 is set ten years after the events of the first season and continues the historically-inspired saga of these two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined.
