Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2: What to Expect
Recently, Disney+ dropped some new looks at Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2, which is a highly anticipated release for this year. Though there has been little revealed visually from Season 2, these new teasers actually present a much more interesting and cohesive perspective into the leading dynamics.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 adapts author Rick Riordan’s second book, The Sea of Monsters. Season 2’s narrative is set a year after the events of Season 1, which saw Percy, Annabeth, and Grover promising to reunite again.
After preventing Olympus from falling into war by returning Zeus’ lightning bolt, Percy returns to Camp Half-Blood only to find out his protector, Grover Underwood, has been captured by Polyphemus. With the help of his friend Annabeth Chase and his rival Clarisse la Rue, Percy is tasked with saving Grover and stopping what Luke Castellan and Kronos have in store.
The new looks, which have been spread across different channels including Instagram and a featurette on YouTube, present a unique picture of what Season 2 might have to offer.
There are some intriguing GIFs that were shared, including Grover facing the wreckage of a damaged ship in a storm, the appearance of C.C. (best known as Circe), and more footage of Percy and Clarisse’s heated bout. However, there are certain clips that dig deeper into the relationship between Percy and Annabeth.
Particularly, there are a few clips that highlight the chariot race that Percy and Annabeth participate in as well as Percy helping the daughter of Athena to her feet in what looks to be a ship’s storage room. These sets of clips are integral to Percabeth, which has been one of the most important elements not just for the series, but for the books as well. The chariot race clips are a big example of this as Percy and Annabeth didn’t agree to work together at the time.
However, this was due to Camp Half-Blood’s reservations to Percy’s cyclops half-brother, Tyson. At this time in the story, Tyson was looked down upon by the rest of the camp. Annabeth even has her own reservations about him due to the circumstances around Thalia Grace’s death, which involved monsters like Tyson.
As such, throughout The Sea of Monsters, as Tyson’s motives were better understood by Annabeth, he became more accepted. Percy and Annabeth even have this discussion during their journey on the CSS Birmingham, Clarisse’s ship manned by the undead, which also seemed to be presented in the clips where Percy is helping Annabeth back up.
The clips of Percy fighting Clarisse are also integral to the development both characters will share. Season 1 highlighted a bullying dynamic that Clarisse had over Percy, but this was revealed to be a personality complex that the daughter of Ares had to honor her father in the second book.
This collection of clips are meant to highlight how Clarisse is dealing with the challenge of living up to Ares’ expectations and how everyone’s perceptions of Percy have shifted this internal power dynamic. As such, the way that Percy and Clarisse develop that new bond on Season 2 could prove interesting as the show maintains its own originality as well.
There were also two other clips: one of an explosion on a ship and another, found on TikTok where Percy, Golden Fleece in hand, is seemingly bleeding from an unknown injury. These two clips seem to be connected to the second time that Luke Castellan captures Percy and his friends and the two enter a fierce duel. However, it seems to be taking liberty with how the action is executed as Percy’s leg was injured, per the book.
There were also some strange clips which included a mysterious hooded figure walking across some plains and even approaching the steps of the Big House. While fans previously recognized another similar figure from Season 1 to be Kronos, it feels likely that this figure is a different character entirely.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 begins streaming this December on Disney+.
