Wednesday Season 2 Part 1 Ending Explained

Tim Burton ramped up the creepy, crawling conspiracy and paranormal mystery once again with Wednesday Season 2 Part 1. Despite Part 1 only being four episodes, the narrative that’s been established has rooted itself deeper into the Addams family’s past. In fact, it’s brought viewers all over the place as Wednesday Addams was focused on two particular investigations.

One of these cases involved the introduction of a new character (and fangirly stalker) Agnes (Evie Templeton). An invisible girl who tricked Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) to become her friend, Agnes eventually became a useful resource in helping the Addams daughter in her second case despite Enid’s (Emma Myers) jealousy. Wednesday’s next case saw her trying to track down her second stalker, who’d been observing her since her return.

Fortunately, this was also solved as, with the help of Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen), Wednesday discovered that Judi Stonehurst (Heather Matarazzo), an Avian, had been experimenting on kidnapped outcasts. However, in her revelation, Wednesday was also confronted by her former ex-turned-killer, Tyler. It was in this place that Pugsley’s (Isaac Ordonez) regenerating zombie, Slurp, was also imprisoned (and also escaped.)

Though so many things happen in Part 1’s ending, we’re actually given all the puzzle pieces necessary to understand Wednesday’s original premonition.

Looming in the back of her mind, Wednesday’s premonition saw her surrounded in a field of graves, much like her mindscape in Season 1. However, it was filled to the brim with undead ravens and a ghastly Enid claiming that Wednesday’s actions would eventually lead to Enid’s death.

While it can be assumed that the ravens hinted at Judi, it could also be presumed that the ravens actually represent Aunt Ophelia, Morticia’s (Catherine Zeta-Jones) sister that was lost to time. Although, it might turn out that Ophelia is actually still alive.

Before that final confrontation, Wednesday found a patient saying cryptic things. Wednesday helped her escape, but we still never caught her name. Furthermore, there were continuous mentions of Ophelia being sent to Willow Hill by Morticia and Hester, her grandmother. Plus, this mysterious patient goes uncredited at the end, further hinting that this is indeed Ophelia.

However, there’s also still the detail of Pugsley’s zombie pet, Slurp, who is slowly regaining his “humanity” through eating brains. Previously, it was known that Slurp was actually one of Nevermore’s smartest students until a freak incident killed him. With Part 1’s ending, as Slurp gets smarter, it’s likely that he’ll have a bigger role in Part 2.

Plus, we also can’t forget Tyler (Hunter Doohan), who made his escape and has a primary motivation to get revenge on Wednesday by killing Enid. With all of these elements, that premonition has become much more clearer.

Part 2 could see Wednesday trying to reconnect with the spirit of Goody in her current state. Through some psychic journey, she also has the chance to fix Ophelia’s spirit and heal her from her mental wounds left by Hester and, in a way, Morticia. Furthermore, with Slurp becoming smarter, it’s likely that he’d want revenge for how he was treated by Nevermore and enact his revenge with the help of Tyler.

It’s possible that, in the climactic final bout between Wednesday and the Nightshades against whatever Slurp’s scheming, Enid can get caught in the crossfire. Her death might have to do with Ophelia’s interference, perhaps influenced by Slurp in some way, and Tyler’s attack. Whatever the case may be regarding Part 2, there’s a high possibility that Enid may have to sacrifice her life to save Wednesday and Nevermore.

There are also the weird circumstances regarding new faculty Principal Dort (Steve Buscemi) and music teacher Isadora Capri (Billie Piper). Principal Dort is unusually focused on making Nevermore the greatest school for outcasts by coercing powerful students, like Bianca, into doing his bidding. On the other hand, Capri might be getting too close to Wednesday for her own good, much like how Thornhill was.

There are still many paths that Wednesday Season 2 Part 2 can take in terms of bringing that premonition into reality. Time will only tell how, and if, Wednesday’s vision will play out the way she envisioned.

Wednesday Season 2 Part 1 is now streaming on Netflix. Part 2 premieres September 3.
