Walker Independence star Justin Johnson Cortez has joined the cast of Netflix’s romantic drama series set in Texas titled Ransom Canyon. Based on the book series by Jodi Thomas, Ransom Canyon is a family drama and contemporary Western saga following the lives of three ranching families, all set against the rugged expanse of Texas Hill Country.

Johnson Cortez joins previously announced cast members Josh Duhamel (The Lost Husband), Minka Kelly (Friday Night Lights), James Brolin (Sweet Tooth), Eoin Macken (La Brea), and Lizzy Greene (A Million Little Things). Written, created, and executive produced by April Blair (All American), Amanda Marsalis (Ozark) is set to direct the first two episodes.

Johnson Cortez will play Kai, an Indigenous deputy on the Ransom Canyon Police Force under Sheriff Dan Lazano. Kai is learning the ropes in his job: picking up drunks, working security detail, and handing out parking tickets when needed. Kai is wary and suspicious of the new foreman in town, Yancy. Kai is protective of Ellie and doesn’t want to see Ellie hurt by Yancy.

Johnson Cortez has also begun filming season four of The CW‘s Walker, recurring as Detective David Luna who was introduced in the season 3 finale of the mothership series. A shrewd homicide Detective who got his start working closely with Cordell Walker (Jared Padalecki) and Captain James (Body Bell) on a case years ago, Detective Luna may have ties to Johnson Cortez’s Walker Independence character, Calian.
