Raves are supposed to be fun, but so much can go wrong when you’re in the midst of a large crowd with thumping music and flickering lights. In the heat of the moment, a killer on the loose is what you would least expect. An underground music festival is the backdrop for Dreamcatcher, a new horror-mystery film written and directed by Jacob Johnston which stars Travis Burns and others.
Dreamcatcher
In movies like this, the need for complex characters with layers and different motives is crucial for driving the story. Upon reading the script, Australian actor Travis Burns said “I have a lot of work to do” in his interview with Popternative. He also mentioned that him and his acting coach brought Dylan to life by developing a backstory for the character. The character dynamic of Dylan explores a struggle that many musicians go through; the juggling between artistry and commercialism. During his preparation for the role, he even watched a documentary on EDM artist Avicii, who he discovered had a lot of parallels to the backstory he had given Dylan. This helped him deliver an even richer performance in Dreamcatcher.
Music
In Dreamcatcher, EDM music is its own character with a pulse. The film masterfully uses Electronic Dance elements to create this slasher type film in unimaginable ways. Since music has such a large role in the film, we wanted to ask Travis about the music scene in Australia. A heavy-metal fan himself, Petey Beats was quick to point out some iconic metal bands, but Travis wanted to make note of the EDM scene in Australia. There are so many branches of EDM music, but Melbourne Underground is a genre from a distinct region, Travis Burns said “it’s this really heavy bass” with trance and EDM”.
