We recently had an extensive chat with Peter McKenna, the showrunner of AMC+’s latest drama, Kin. The series, which dropped on September 9, stars a stellar Irish and international cast led by Charlie Cox (Daredevil) as Michael Kinsella, Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) as Frank Kinsella, Ciarán Hinds (Game of Thrones) as Eamon Cunningham, Clare Dunne (Herself) as Amanda Kinsella, Sam Keeley (The Cured) as Eric “Viking” Kinsella, Emmett J. Scanlan (Peaky Blinders) as Jimmy Kinsella, Maria Doyle Kennedy (Orphan Black, Outlander) as Bridget “Birdy” Goggins and newcomer Yasmin Seky as Nikita Murphy. Shot in Dublin, the series is set against a stunning Ireland backdrop, and charts the lives of a fictional Dublin family – The Kinsellas – a small but tight-knit crime family embroiled in a war against a powerful drug kingpin, Eamon Cunningham (Hinds). A boy is killed and his family embark on a gangland war with an international cartel – a war that is impossible to win.
In our interview with Peter, he talks about working with such an amazing cast:
It was just absolutely incredible, and when you start out with something like this you imagine, like when I’m writing I think ‘this cast member’; and usually with shows, you don’t get your dream cast, and this was one where I exceeded it. We were really really lucky because we were in a situation where cast members became available to us become of the pandemic.
When we asked Peter as the creator and writer what his mindset was like when writing the script, he noted: “what was really in my mind was consequences“
