We recently spoke with Canadian actor Richard Harmon on the Popternative show. Born in Mississauga, Ontario, he is commonly known for his role as John Murphy in The CW’s hit series The 100. In our interview, we talk about his acting career, The 100’s run, and tons more.
Richard has found a lot of success on a wide range of different projects. It’s something he doesn’t take for granted he says, “Obviously there’s a lot of work and patience that goes into being lucky, but I consider myself wildly lucky to have the kind of career I’ve had so far.” It seems like he was bound for this career path as his family is highly involved in the film business, but Richard says acting wasn’t exactly something he always wanted to pursue growing up. In our interview, Richard mentions: “I wanted to be a wide receiver at the University of Notre Dame, but God didn’t bless me with that kind of body.” He did do some acting as a child and loved being on set, but Richard didn’t start mastering the craft until his teenage years. Now it has become Richard’s passion and he finds it very fulfilling: “If I’m not working and I’m in between projects, I get very antsy. If I’m not working, I’m not a fun person to be around.”
During The 100‘s epic 7 season run, Richard’s character John Murphy was the most polarizing figure in the series. A complex and layered character, Murphy had quite the journey in the show, “We just took that character on such an arc” he says, and added “At the end of the seventh season, I don’t think there’s anything else we can do with him at this point.” The global reception of the show is something he will always cherish, “It’s amazing, there is no other way to put it.”
