To celebrate the release of Disney+’s new series The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, here at Popternative we’ve done a series of interviews with members from the cast. The Mighty Ducks franchise has been a staple in the childhoods of millennials, so it’s awesome to now see a cult classic reintroduced to a new generation. This felt like the perfect time for Matt Doherty who played Les Averman in the original movies to make another appearance on our show.
The Mighty Ducks Trilogy
Looking back on things, Matt Doherty shared some of his favourite memories from filming the original trilogy. Before it was named the Honda Center, it was originally known as the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim. There was no better way to usher in this new arena than filming the sequel to The Mighty Ducks as it inspired the launch of an NHL team that would later go on to play in that rink. During the filming, Matt Doherty had an uneasy feeling, “it was this tension because we knew in like 5 days there was going to be 12, 000 people in the building.” Throughout the filming, Matt mentioned that among the crowd were some pretty big names such as Michael Eisner, the president of Disney and Wayne Gretzky, the greatest hockey player.

A reboot of The Mighty Ducks franchise wouldn’t be as mighty without the cast members from the original trilogy, and the new show has done a great job delivering to fans of the original movies. For Matt Doherty, seeing the new flock of ducks on the ice sort of felt like déjà vu to him, “it just took me back to the experience of being that age and it was surreal is the only way to describe it.” In addition to this, being able to reunite with some of the cast members from the original films was a lot of fun. Their bond that formed decades ago is still strong, “we all laughed that it was just like no time had passed.” Matt says.
