We recently spoke with actress Malia Baker who plays Mary Anne Spier in Netflix‘s comedy-drama series The Baby-Sitters Club, which is based on the novel series of the same name by Ann M. Martin. Season 2 was recently released on October 11. In our interview, Malia talks about filming season 2, what we can expect from season 2, and much more.
Malia talks about being part of a television series that is adapted from a popular book series: “We already have a fan base, we have these people that are so excited about this, and the characters are iconic, so being able to step into those characters and be them is surreal.” We then dive into Mary Anne as a character and her popularity among fans, and Malia explains why she enjoys playing this character so much:
Mary Anne is now this bi-racial girl and we’ve adapted it to the 21st century; it’s more relatable for a lot of BIPOC girls watching it nowadays. And having her be just this shy girl growing up with her friends instead of having a sob story behind it was really intriguing and interesting to me; having the same experiences that Mary Anne is having. And I think that’s just the most important thing that has kind of drawn me to this character.
