In recent times, movie fans have been enamored with all the theatrics that come with a big budget project, but the best directors are the ones who can make a solid film without gimmicks. The movies that rely on true craftsmanship, great writing and acting are the ones that stand the test of time. A lot of credit and praise should be given to Brian A. Metcalf, director and producer of the new film Adverse starring Mickey Rourke, Lou Diamond Phillips, Sean Astin, Thomas Nicholas and others.
Adverse: Brian A. Metcalf on Writing Complex Characters
Typically when watching blockbuster action films, the characters are generally one dimensional because people want to turn their brain off, sit back and see explosions. While discussing his new film Adverse on our show, Brian A. Metcalf emphasized the importance of making sure “your characters are as complex as possible.” After creating dynamic characters, the next step for him was to find an ensemble who could bring these characters to life. It is no small feat that he was able to assemble the cast he ended up with. In Popternative’s interview with Brian, he explained “we were very fortunate to get this cast” and “we tried to take people from multiple generations.” This was a very bold strategy because it allows people of all ages to identify with actors or actresses.
Brian A. Metcalf’s Journey
Most of the time, when someone enters the film industry, they have to wear many different hats while performing multiple tasks. Brian didn’t become a director overnight; he had to start from the bottom and work his way up. The journey for Brian began in post-production as he started off his career editing videos, commercials and designing DVD menus. The Adverse director stated that the experience he gained from his previous jobs ultimately helped him become a better director. For young aspiring film makers, Brian’s story proves to be a valuable lesson that shows chasing instant gratification isn’t always the formula for success.
