During the 1800s, there were numerous writers who cemented their place in English literature. Among some of these great writers was Mary Shelley who is widely known for writing Frankenstein, which many historians have dubbed as the very first science-fiction novel. In an era where the characteristics of romanticism (nature, the supernatural, imagination and emotions) dominated the literary landscape, they are now cranked up and on full display in Shudder’s new original film A Nightmare Wakes, starring Alix Wilton Regan as Mary Shelley.
A Nightmare Wakes
A Nightmare Wakes is an adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and takes place around the same time she wrote it. The film explores how Mary Shelley’s personal relationships and the death of her children fueled her creative process, but with a twist. In our interview with actress Alix Wilton Regan, she says “To me, it’s not even a horror film. To me, it’s a really dark, messed up, deep dive psychological drama.” The weight and honour of portraying a figure like Mary Shelley was not something that Regan took lightly, she added “I do describe Mary Shelley as an icon of British Literature. She’s extraordinary!” By using her character as a vehicle, the film demonstrates the power of imagination through the lens of Mary Shelley.
Voice Acting
Alix Wilton Regan is also a voice actor and is renowned in the gaming community. Some titles that she is credited for as a voice actor include Assassins Creed Origins, Cyberpunk 2077, Mass Effect 3, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint, and there is still a whole lot more! When we asked her about Cyberpunk, she revealed she initially had no idea what it was and recalled saying “What’s Cyberpunk?” and the crew’s response was “It’s the biggest game of the year.” It’s funny she mentioned this, because Cyberpunk 2077 has arguably been the most popular game over the last year.
